Besides, if everyone on this board 'gets over it' and leaves, who's going to be there to support all those future 'escapees' (and let's hope there's going to be many, many more of them)?

well, according to the wtbts it's not, anyway.. back in my witnessy days, the public talk entitled: "is your conscience a reliable guide for living?
" majored on man's totally inability to do anything remotely good of his own accord.
IMHO, if you allow another individual or *ahem* organisation to make every remotely significant decision in life for you, then what was the point in God supposedly giving you a conscience? And I don't mean a 'Watchtower Bible-trained conscience' either - the faculty was supposed to have been 'wired in' to humans way before the WT was ever thought about, if the Bible is to be believed - "law to those without law" and all that.
As far as the WT and conscience goes, my thoughts are pretty well summed up in the words of Robert Burns, in his 'Advice to a Young Friend':
"The fear o' hell's* a hangman's whip to [hold] the wretch in order / But where you feel your conscience grip, let that ay be your border"
(*for "hell", substitute "Armageddon" )

Unfortunately, I've not yet managed to build up a substantial enough social structure for much of a fuss to be made of it - I did get presents for my 30th from a couple of bods I'd gotten to know by that point (not enough for a party, though); it being a 'big' b'day somehow triggered a major feeling of loss for all the previous 29 I'd never had
As I say to anyone who asks if having a b'day close to Xmas means I get fewer presents, "well, it's never made any difference in my bloody family."

i just saw president bush on the tv.
he was saying in his very slow way of speaking "we must defend ourselves against the enemies of freedom"and "a great evil is upon the world".
and all of a sudden i had this thought "what if the jw are right..."
I sometimes think that the mind of an XJW is like a former battlefield seeded with with mines; the war might be long over, but the mines are still there, waiting to be triggered... I remember the same stab of fear when 9/11 happened; fortunately, I was able to give myself a mental *slap* and say "remember, you thought it was The Big A/'peace and security' when the Berlin Wall came down, twelve years before!"
For me, it just demonstrates how deeply implanted the WT programming is - I know there are people much further away in time from the WT than myself who sometimes struggle with the same thinking. Always makes me think of the lyrics from'Hotel California' - "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave..."

why are all angels in jw publications male?
i was thinking about this today, as i notice other christian religions show angels as male and female.
do you think that this was another way of showing how males were superior to females in their teaching, or that their god "jehovah" was more favorable to the male appearance.

Seriously, I was racking my brains trying to think of any scriptural examples, and a couple do spring to mind; John refers to the angel giving him the Revelation as male ("right away HE said to me, 'these are the ones that come out of the great tribulation...'"), and the angels that visited Lot appeared as men. Come to think of it, the 'rebellious' angels pre-Flood, when they fancied a bit of nooky, materialised as men, too. Think about it - all the fun, with none of the pregnancy... *running for cover*
